The European dactyloscopy system or Eurodac is the fingerprint database of the European Union to identify asylum seekers at different Schengen borders. The fingerprints of all asylum seekers over the age of 14 must be registered in this system. Once the fingerprints have been registered, their information is sent digitally to a central unit at the European Commission and automatically sent to all Schengen Member States. For example, authorities can check whether asylum seekers have already applied for asylum in a Schengen member state or not. The fingerprint identification system has been activated since January 2003 and all EU member states, along with 3 countries Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, are members of this system.
